Nighttime Firefly Walk

July 7 @ 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm

There’s nothing more magical than watching fireflies on a midsummer’s night! Early July is prime time for watching fireflies at their most luminescent, so join us to see which members of the Lampyridae family are out looking for love in the fields.

Don Salvatore, long time science educator at the Museum of Science in Boston and past curator of the Firefly Watch Community Science Project, will start with some background on fireflies, then we’ll take a short walk around the edge of a field looking for their beacons of light. We will be observing fireflies (not catching them), although Don will catch a few and have a microscope on hand for viewing them up close.

Recommended for ages 8+. It will be dark, so please bring a flashlight, although once people are settled in a location along the edge of the field, we’ll request that flashlights be turned off.  Wear clothing appropriate for the temperatures and walking on uneven ground, and bring a walking stick for stability and insect repellent if desired.

For more information about fireflies, register for Don’s June 27th virtual talk on fireflies or watch the recording if the date has passed. Registration opens in June.
