Hard Rock Geology of the Cathance River Nature Preserve

July 23, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am

mica at preserve

This walk is full!

This walk will focus on the local geology of the Cathance River Preserve with an emphasis on the minerals and rocks visible in historic quarry pits. This program will offer a rare opportunity to hear the stories behind the geological features that can be seen close to the trails and along the banks of the Cathance River.

The walk will be led by Dr. Rachel Beane, Professor of Earth and Oceanographic Science at Bowdoin College. Her research uses mineral compositions and textures to understand solid earth processes. With Bowdoin students, she also studies Maine’s fascinating bedrock geology. Rachel was awarded the 2003 Sydney B. Karofsky Prize that recognizes the faculty member who “best demonstrates the ability to impart knowledge, inspire enthusiasm, and stimulate intellectual curiosity.”
