Learning Is for the Birds: Ten Years of Bird Banding and Education at River Point

March 23 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Learn what it’s like to get up close and personal with our feathered friends! Patrick Keenan of Portland-based Biodiversity Research Institute will tell us how they capture and band songbirds at their River Point Conservation Area and what they hope to learn from their observations and research.

Patrick will share how BRI’s work has translated into educational opportunities, including opportunities to get involved. This presentation is paired with an opportunity to visit BRI’s River Point Conservation Area on April 24th to observe birds in the hand during a bird capture and banding session. Registration for that event is separate, which you can find here.

Patrick is a graduate of Colby College (2000) and earned a MS in Zoology and Physiology from the University of Wyoming (2007). Over the last 20 years Patrick has participated in research and conservation work in many capacities – as a student, bird biologist, project manager, volunteer and intern coordinator, researcher and collaborator, educator, and outreach and bird observatory director. Much of this work has occurred at Biodiversity Research Institute where he has worked since 2007, currently serving as the Education and Outreach Director. Patrick enjoys time with his family including hiking and camping, playing and coaching soccer, gardening, and keeping the family chickens away from the neighborhood fox.
