GMOW – Cathance River Nature Preserve Snowshoe or Hike
February 17, 2020
Celebrate the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend (GMOW) by joining us for a fun afternoon winter outing in Topsham at the Cathance River Nature Preserve, co-sponsored by the Maine Appalachian Mountain Club. Maine AMC’s Michelle will lead the group on a snowshoe or hike (based on conditions) on the Preserve trails, one of her favorite hikes in the area.
Trails will lead us down to the river where ice formations can be magical in winter. We will follow the river, doing as many trail sections as the group is up for, then returning via a loop or the same trail. Watch for animal tracks along the way and enjoy this beautiful woods walk. Trails are narrow with some short steeper sections. Snowshoes required if enough snow. Microspikes or similar traction will be required if icy.
Plan on about 2+hours out. Please let us know if you need to borrow snowshoes. You’ll have a chance to learn about the Cathance River Education Alliance from a CREA staff member who will open the Ecology Center for a tour of its specimens of native birds and animals. Then, enjoy hot chocolate as we learn more about the flora and fauna of the area. Michelle will also talk about our local land trust – the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust – which holds an easement on the property.
AMC’s Michelle is coordinating registration. To register, please email Michelle () to get details about time and parking. Please provide a bit of info on your winter hiking experience, equipment, and a phone contact. Let her know if you need to borrow snowshoes.
This event is free but registration is required.
