Birding for Beginners

April 9 @ 7:30 am - 9:30 am

There are plenty of walks available for those who are already into birds. This walk is not for those folks. This walk is for people who want to get a sense of what ‘birding’ is all about and explore whether they might want to get to know our feathered friends a little better.

Birding does not have to be a competitive sport, although that is a fun aspect of it for some. But it can also be a wonderful way to relax with some quiet time in nature – for five minutes or five hours!

Two amateur birders will be your guide, sharing just a few tips on how to get started without overwhelming you. That’s the beauty of birding. You can know as much or as little as YOU want. We’ll cover how to use binoculars, how to look and listen for birds, share a few useful tools, and walk to a variety of habitats looking for birds.

We’ve intentionally scheduled this walk in early spring before the trees leaf out when it’s easier to see birds. Since many migrating birds will not have arrived, most of what we’ll see will be the ‘regulars’ – woodpeckers, titmouses, chickadees, nuthatches. The regulars are plenty of fun to watch as they go about their business – gossiping, foraging, scolding their neighbors, etc.

We’ll start early (7:30am) because that’s when all the bird action is! So bring your coffee. We’ll do a short intro at the Ecology Center, then a slow, quiet walk to various habitats in search of the sights and sounds of our feathered friends.  We’ll probably enjoy some other beautiful aspects of the natural world along the way.

Binoculars will be available for use on the walk. Ages 10 and up. Max of 15 participants. Guides: Meg Holland and Caroline Eliot. Registration required. Rain date: Sunday, April 10.
